PSG vs Lyon Postponed to Monday as Ballon d’Or Ceremony Coincides

PARIS, FRANCE — October 23, 2026

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 home match against Olympique Lyonnais has been postponed from Sunday, October 25, to Monday, October 26, following security concerns raised by Paris police ahead of planned demonstrations in the French capital.

The French Professional Football League (LFP) confirmed that the match will kick off at 8:30 p.m. local time on Monday at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Security Concerns Prompt Schedule Change

Police requested the postponement because large demonstrations are expected in Paris and authorities are preparing for a major security operation. Previous protests on October 17 were accompanied by violence and looting in Paris and other French cities.

Authorities also need to provide security for other major sporting events in the Paris area, including an NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France on Sunday.

Ballon d’Or Ceremony Creates a Scheduling Clash

The rescheduled fixture will take place on the same evening as the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where several Paris Saint-Germain players have been nominated for individual awards.

Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, is among the nominees. However, reports indicate that he is currently injured and will not play against Lyon. His injury means he may still be able to attend the awards ceremony if he chooses to do so.

Other PSG players, including Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos, have also been reported as injured and could potentially attend the event. Their attendance has not been guaranteed.

A Crucial Ligue 1 Fixture

The match is part of the eighth round of the French league season. Lyon and PSG were level on points at the top of the standings ahead of the weekend, making the fixture significant in the early league race.

The schedule change highlights the challenges of organising major sporting events amid heightened public-security concerns. The LFP’s decision followed the police order prohibiting the match from taking place at its originally scheduled time.
