Melania Trump Launches Fostering the Future Accounts for Foster Youth
WASHINGTON, D.C. — First Lady Melania Trump announced the launch of Fostering the Future Accounts on June 11, 2026, alongside U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The initiative aims to expand access to savings and investment accounts for eligible children and young people in foster care.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the program is designed to help foster youth build financial assets and prepare for greater independence as they transition into adulthood.
How the Program Works
Under the federal guidance, eligible state, territorial, and tribal child welfare agencies acting as legal guardians may establish an initial Trump Account for a child in foster care who has a Social Security number and does not already have an account. Agencies must follow the applicable procedures, including submitting IRS Form 4547.
The initiative also gives states flexibility to deposit eligible federal survivor benefits into these accounts, subject to applicable rules and contribution limits. The funds are intended to support future needs, including education, housing, and career development.
Part of a Broader Initiative
Fostering the Future Accounts form part of Melania Trump’s broader Fostering the Future initiative, which focuses on opportunities for children and young people in foster care.
The administration says the program aims to strengthen financial security and help eligible young people establish a foundation for long-term independence. However, access depends on eligibility requirements and the relevant agencies’ implementation procedures.
