Ilhan Omar to Move From WashIlhan Omar to Move From Washington Home After Federal Search, Citing Safety Concerns
WASHINGTON, D.C. — October 23, 2026
U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar says she plans to move out of her Washington, D.C., home after federal agents searched the property last week. She said the attention surrounding the search has made her feel unsafe there.
Federal Investigation Underway
In her first interview following the search, Omar told MS NOW that the incident had left her shaken. According to the Associated Press, investigators searched the residence for approximately four to five hours and seized 17 items, including phones and notebooks, as described by Omar.
Federal authorities are investigating potential fraud involving immigration paperwork connected to Omar’s family. The Associated Press reported that some of her relatives had received grand jury subpoenas, citing a person familiar with the investigation who was not authorized to speak publicly.
The Justice Department has released limited information about the case, describing it as a criminal investigation. The publicly reported allegations have not established that Omar or her relatives committed a crime.
Omar Denies Wrongdoing
Omar, a Minnesota Democrat who was born in Somalia and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen, has said she is confident that she did nothing wrong. She arrived in the United States with her family at age 12 after they obtained asylum and became a U.S. citizen in 2000.
The search has prompted criticism from Democratic lawmakers, some of whom have questioned its timing ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details may emerge as authorities release additional information.
