Melania Trump Helps Broker Temporary Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire in Oleshky

Oleshky, Ukraine — October 23, 2026

U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has helped broker a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, according to an announcement released by the White House on Friday.

The proposed agreement is intended to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and prepare for the evacuation of civilians through a designated safe passage. The White House said the localized ceasefire is scheduled to begin on October 29, 2026.

Humanitarian Crisis in Southern Ukraine

Oleshky is located in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, across the Dnipro River from Ukrainian-held territory. Russian forces have occupied the city since 2022.

According to the White House, the city’s remaining population is estimated at approximately 1,700 to 2,000 people, including elderly residents and children. Residents have faced severe shortages of food, medicine, electricity, heating and clean water amid continuing conflict.

How the Ceasefire Is Expected to Work

The White House said Melania Trump initiated discussions with Russian and Ukrainian leadership and helped coordinate the terms of the localized agreement. Civilian representatives from both sides are expected to assess residents’ needs, organize humanitarian assistance and coordinate transportation for people who wish to leave.

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, said the operation would be carried out gradually and would be challenging to implement. The plan is intended to allow civilians to choose their preferred destination, whether in Ukraine or Russia.

A Limited Ceasefire, Not an End to the War

The announced agreement applies specifically to Oleshky and is intended to support humanitarian relief and civilian evacuation. It does not represent a comprehensive peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

At the time of the announcement, independent confirmation from both governments remained limited. The success of the operation will depend on implementation on the ground and whether the agreed pause in military action allows aid workers and civilians to move safely.
