Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Four Countries Beyond Congo

By NGN News | October 24, 2026

A fast-moving Ebola outbreak originating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has spread to four other countries, bringing the total number of affected countries to five. The outbreak has reached Central, Eastern and Western Africa, according to reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Associated Press.

Five Countries Affected

The countries affected are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and France. Nigeria reported an imported case in October after a woman travelled from Uganda, while Kenya has also reported cases linked to travel from Congo.

Uganda’s outbreak was declared over in August after 20 confirmed cases, including two deaths. France reported an imported case involving a doctor who had returned from a humanitarian mission in Congo; the patient recovered.

Thousands of Cases Reported in Congo

In its October 23 update, the WHO reported 9,704 confirmed cases and 4,687 deaths in Congo as of October 20. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare species of Ebola virus for which no approved vaccine or specific drug treatment is currently available.

Health Authorities Monitor Further Spread

The spread across multiple African regions highlights the importance of early diagnosis, contact tracing, infection prevention and cross-border cooperation. Authorities are monitoring exposed contacts and working to limit further transmission.

The WHO continues to provide updates as the situation develops. Figures may change as new cases are confirmed and public health investigations progress.
